This directory of independent specialists -all unique to Brighton and Hove- is the most visible part of ur campaign to support our local economy. It began in August 2005, originally as an offshoot of an education project about local food. Based on word of mouth and emailed recommendations we made a directory of independent food outlets, then added five other shopping categories.
It was good to be able to apply our experience in creating and advising publishers on digital educational resources to make something to showcase our local independent places.
All the listed businesses started out as 'unique to Brighton and Hove' specialists.They all have something extra special about the origins of their products - with a focus on quality. We wanted to celebrate our own 'unchained Brighton' (thank you, Dave Gorman) and to spotlight this vital part of Brighton's unique mix.
The original project was the brainchild of Sue Korman. Phil Blackwood and Penny Davies help with the campaign and with keeping the listings up to date.
Most of the shop front photos were taken by Sam- he can be spotted reflected in some of the windows! The website itself could not exist without the creative talent, technical ability and patience of the team at The Wendy House. February 2009.
